The Second African Light Source Conference in Ghana 2019 envisioned three kinds of consortia to be established in order to structure and nurture capacity within Africa exploiting existing or new facilities:

1. Multi-national Consortia (distributed) to jointly access International Synchrotrons
2. Multi-national Consortia (regional) to jointly apply for large scale funds and assemble regional funds to develop regional infrastructure as feeder / training / research infrastructure towards building the User Base
3. Multi-national Consortia (regional) for African Beamlines (Tomography for Palaeontology, Crystallography Drug Discovery, Materials Science for the Environment, Energy, Minerals beneficiation etc).
